An relatively new American aromatic variety that is excellent for both aroma and bittering. This variety is a bit like a stronger version of Cascade, with a citrus-floral taste and aroma, although many tasters also find a note of orange in the flavor. Excellent for hoppy American style ales. Average alpha acid: 8.5%

Amarillo® is the name of the VGXPO1 varietal hop sourced by Virgil Gamache Farms.

Pros: What a hop! This one is perfect for American IPA. It has its own unique aroma and flavor. If you haven't made an all-Amarillo Pale Ale yet, do it. You won't regret it.

Best of the citrusy hops

Review by ehuntoon420 on 3/10/2008

Pros: This variety of hops is very aromatic and will give a wonderful grapefruit and citrus aroma. With a good amount of bitterness that is also tempered by a subtle citrus twang.

Cons: Can't buy enough of them.

Great flavor

Review by Josh on 3/11/2008

Pros: Amarillo is one of the top flavor/aroma hops available. If you like PA's, IPA's & IIPA's this is the hop to use. It's similar to cascade but stronger. I use this hop all the time.

Cons: You can only get them in 2oz. packages.

Did not like

Pros: Nothing

Cons: I had bad luck with this hop brewing American Lager. Probably better for bold ales which I dont brew.

Great hop!

Review by Brandon J. on 7/15/2008

Pros: A Super Cascade. Nice distinct orange flavor and aroma. It can be a bit sweet when young. Excellent in American Pale Ale, American IPA. Try it in Jamil's Evil Twin

Cons: There is a shortage of them
