BrewTan B (formerly named Tanal B) is an all natural tannic acid that extends shelf life and enhances flavor and colloidal stability. The tannins in Brewtan B react with wort proteins though absorption and precipitation, which then settles out in the trub when brewing. Highly effective in coagulating and flocculating unstable haze producing proteins.

To use when mashing, dissolve ¼ teaspoon of powder in warm water and add to mash strike water. If adding to the boil, dissolve ½ teaspoon of powder in half a cup of warm water, and add about 15 minutes before the end of the boil. If using in the boil, add Brewtan-B before adding any sort of kettle fining like Irish Moss or Whirlfloc.

Sold in 1 ounce and 1 pound sizes.

Works well as part of the LODO trifecta additions

Review by Max Stout on 7/18/2022

Brewtan B, when used in conjunction with SMB and ascorbic acid ("trifecta") in the mash, can help limit oxidation. If you use a copper IC, it is helpful to add Brewtan B as a late boil addition, before you add finings. The boil addition can reduce the oxidative effects from the Fenton reactions. Brewtan B can also improve shelf stability, something I have noticed in my bottled homebrew since using it. Highly recommended!

This is a exciting new product.

I've only brewed with this once and that beer is still fermenting. I'm very excited to be trying this product. Williams Brewing seems to be one of the very few companies selling this in the U.S.A.. Until just recently this had to be shipped here from Australia if you wanted it. Everything I've been hearing about this product has me thinking it will change the beer I age very much for the better. And the price on this is great.

Works but

Product works well, but you still need to use whirlfloc. Also I recommend using in both the mash and boil to get maximum benefits. Only down fall is you still need to use whirlfloc whereas you do not with another highly effective colloidal stability agent. I prefer the other agent as I find it more effective. But this will work.

Q: I need to use tannic acid in a science project to test tea to see if it has caffeine. Can this work?

A: Brewtan B is tannic acid. Here the manufacturers description: Brewtan B (formerly called Tanal B) is a 100% natural, high molecular weight tannic acid extracted from renewable plant materials specifically for the brewing industry. Incorporating Brewtan B into your process will improve the shelf life and enhance the flavor and colloidal stability of your beer. The gallotannins in Brewtan B react with wort proteins through adsorption and precipitation - the Brewtan B/protein complex is left in the spent grains when Brewtan B is added to the mash, or removed in the whirlpool when it is added to the boiler. It is highly effective at coagulating and flocculating proline and –thiol –containing proteins, but does not interact with foam-positive proteins. This in turn inhibits downstream lipid and protein oxidation, improving flavor stability and shelf life.
