This basic stir plate will dramatically increase the rate of yeast growth in your yeast starter flask. Just put the included magnetic stir bar into the flask, and place it on the plate. Spinning magnets in the plate cause the stir bar to rotate, agitating the yeast starter.
This unit has a 12 volt stir motor, which is controlled by a precision voltage regulator for easy speed adjustment. The RPMs of the drive motor are limited, so the motor will not “throw” the stir bar (unless you turn it up too high or move the starter once it has started), yet it provides enough to get a good vortex going. A low voltage, plug-in wall transformer provides power to the unit. The black plastic case dimensions are 6" x 4" x 2", large enough to accommodate a 2000ml flask (1000ml flask shown above). A Teflon coated 1"stir bar is included (longer bars are not recommended). A “keeper” magnet is also supplied to lock the stir bar in place while the yeast is pitched, so the stir bar won’t end up in your fermenter.
Unlike much more expensive laboratory units, this model is not designed to be used with corrosive chemicals, in wet areas, or with hot items, but it works just fine with yeast.
I have 2 of these now and my older one (about a year old) still works great! I use these with 5L flasks without any problems. You can't crank it up all the way or it will throw the stirbar but it still gets a decent vortex going at about 3/4 speed. Virtually silent operation.
I've only used it once so far, but I/m pleased with the quiet operation and efficiency of the stirrer. 30+ minutes of stir time produced a well blended, smooth slurry. You may consider purchasing a foam stopper to use with this apparatus. It would be better with a slightly longer stir bar. If it lasts for long time, then it will be well worth the price.
I've used it twice and works just as discribed. It has variable speeds and stir maintains momentum. The product is a worthwhile addition to a brew lab.
I have been home brewing and making Mead since 1990 and I finally broke down and bought this little jewel. It works great and has significantly cut the lag time of my yeast starters. Simple to use and does the job well. It comes with a keeper magnet so you don't pour the spinner into your wort/must but you DO have to remember to use it!
I love the engineering of homebrewing almost as much as the beer and brewing itself. When I considered making my own stir plate though, I realized I'd save very little money and spend a considerable amount more time building my own when compared with this stir plate.
This will quietly stir a flask up to 2 liters (which is its only limitation, in my opinion). My 2 liter flask hangs off its sides just a bit, but it's still quite stable.
