Five Star Chemicals has been producing cleansers for commercial breweries for some time, and has now packaged their cleaning technology into home brewing sized packages. Their approach is twofold; the brewer first uses Powdered Brewery Cleaner to remove deposits from equipment, and then uses Star San, a professional grade soaking sanitizer, to sanitize the cleaned equipment.   Both PBW and Star San are safe for limited contact use with stainless steel, plastic, copper, brass, and ceramics, and are safe for septic systems.

This one pound jar of PBW will make 12 gallons of dilute scrubbing cleanser (should be used in combination with Star San, a non-rinsing Sanitizer).

Only cleaner I use
PBW is the best cleanser I've used to date...It gets off even the worst sticky burnt messes like scorched wort and it works for everything in my set-up, not just bottles. Hoses, pots, pumps, spoons & paddle, MT, RIM tubing inside and out, At the end of every brew session, I save about 1/4 of the hot / warm water in my HLT to mix with some PBW. Then use it to cycle through my pumps, hoses, SS tubing, ect. I don't so much rely on it's "sanitizing" properties though. I leave that up to the Star San.
Highly recommend as a cleanser. I even ordered one of the small packets of PBW to give to a friend of mine so he could see how great the stuff is. ( Well, I wasn't going to give him MY PBW, LoL ) Williams shipping was fast and courteous as always.

need to clean it? try pbw
pbw has a million uses. i first bought it for removing labels off of bottles. make a mixture, leave bottles in it for 20 min. to 1 hour, and most labels will come right off of the bottle. wipe outside of bottle with a cloth or sponge, and you have a perfectly clean bottle. gunk in a carboy? just fill it with a soultion of pbw, let it set for a day or two, and it all just rinses clean. if you are looking at a smaller size of pbw, go ahead and buy yourself the big container. also found that it works wonderfully in the kitchen. it is not cheap, but it works. thank you, 5 star.

Does PBW work in cold water?
Yes, but the warmer the water, the more effective it is.
