Brown Malt was the only malt used in porter brewing in the early 19th century, before it was supplanted by pale ale malt, chocolate, and black patent. For porter, use up to 50% Brown Malt in the mash.

Excellent stuff
I made a brown porter utilizing almost 50% of this stuff, then read information after the fact that made me think I had well and truly messed up - it turned out to be one of the best beers I've ever made, full of roasty, toasty deliciousness.  This is definitely a malt I'll be keeping around and utilizing for future brews.
