When you need a pump for brewing, you want something that is versatile, food grade, and able to take the heat. This pump is versatile, and will handle everything from just-boiled wort to cooled beer or wine (although it is not self priming, and you must flood the pump head to prime it before it starts). It features a molded polysulfone head with magnetic drive, which means it can handle liquids as hot as 250 degrees F., and still be FDA approved (food grade). This is more than enough for brewing, as boiling wort has a temperature of 212 F at sea level, and less as your elevation increases.
This pump has a maximum flow of 7.2 gpm level in and level out, and will pump up to 12 feet higher than where the pump is mounted. The more height you pump, the less the gallons per minute. For example, if you want to pump up 6, it will pump 3.25 gallons per minute, and if you want to go up the full 12, it will pump 1 gallon per minute or less. The maximum pressure the pump can produce in a closed system is 5 PSI.
Magnetic drive means there are no shaft seals to wear out or leak, and small trub particles can pass through without clogging the pump. With magnetic drive, you can also put a valve on the outlet side of this pump to slow it down by adding backpressure without damaging it (the magnet acts like a clutch, letting the impeller slow down without slowing down the motor). The magnetic drive spinner is powered by a 1/25 hp, fan cooled 1.4 amp motor. Magnetic drive also means it is not self priming, so you have to put this pump under the level of the boiling pot or fermenter from which you intend to pump.
The pump comes with a 6' cord and plug, and includes a mounting plate so you can mount it where you need it. Inlet and outlets are ½ male pipe thread, which means our high temperature polypropelene fittings (see links below) will easily adapt it to ½ or 3/8 interior diameter tubing. These fittings also have the advantage of being gentle on the molded threads, unlike stainless steel or brass fittings. The face can be unbolted and rotated at 90 degree intervals to align the inlet and outlet to suit your particular application. See our line of high temperature thermoplastic tubing and low temperature vinyl tubing below for an easy way to connect this pump to your brew pot or fermenter.
To clean, just run water with a trace of sanitizer through the pump. Parts coming in contact with fluid are made of polysulfone, stainless steel, Teflon, silicon rubber, and Raton. The pump head is disassembled with four screws (see more detail link). If you need to run hot wort through a Therminator or counter flow wort chiller, or pump finished beer or wine from a fermenter, this pump is unsurpassed. 7.5" long, 3.25" wide, and 3.6" tall. Made by March Manufacturing.
Note: For a self priming transfer pump that will withstand temperatures of up to 125° F, see our Variable Speed Self Priming Pump. Lubrication Note: This pump should be occasionally lubricated with SAE 20 non detergent oil. Three In One Motor Oil (available at most hardware stores) is perfect for this.
Important Safety Notice: This pump, like all 110 volt items that run in potentially wet areas, should be plugged into a GFI protected outlet for safety.
