This basic stir plate will dramatically increase the rate of yeast growth in your yeast starter flask. Just put the included magnetic stir bar into the flask, and place it on the plate. Spinning magnets in the plate cause the stir bar to rotate, agitating the yeast starter.

This unit has a 12 volt stir motor, which is controlled by a precision voltage regulator for easy speed adjustment. The RPMs of the drive motor are limited, so the motor will not “throw” the stir bar (unless you turn it up too high or move the starter once it has started), yet it provides enough to get a good vortex going. A low voltage, plug-in wall transformer provides power to the unit. The black plastic case dimensions are 6" x 4" x 2", large enough to accommodate a 2000ml flask (1000ml flask shown above). A Teflon coated 1"stir bar is included (longer bars are not recommended). A “keeper” magnet is also supplied to lock the stir bar in place while the yeast is pitched, so the stir bar won’t end up in your fermenter.

Unlike much more expensive laboratory units, this model is not designed to be used with corrosive chemicals, in wet areas, or with hot items, but it works just fine with yeast.

Quality Product
I've used it twice and works just as discribed. It has variable speeds and stir maintains momentum. The product is a worthwhile addition to a brew lab.

Why did I wait so long?
I have been home brewing and making Mead since 1990 and I finally broke down and bought this little jewel. It works great and has significantly cut the lag time of my yeast starters. Simple to use and does the job well. It comes with a keeper magnet so you don't pour the spinner into your wort/must but you DO have to remember to use it!

Great intro stir plate
I love the engineering of homebrewing almost as much as the beer and brewing itself. When I considered making my own stir plate though, I realized I'd save very little money and spend a considerable amount more time building my own when compared with this stir plate. This will quietly stir a flask up to 2 liters (which is its only limitation, in my opinion). My 2 liter flask hangs off its sides just a bit, but it's still quite stable.

Great plate, great price
I wanted to get into making yeast starters but didn't want to spend $100+ on a fancy stir plate. I have been satisfied with other products purchased from William's so I took a chance on this one and am happy that I did. Works just fine with a 2000ml flask and 1.5L starter. Once I pushed my luck with a 2L starter that blew the sponge and coated the stir plate, and the rest of my chest freezer which was set up as a 74 degree environment. It was easy to remove the screws and clean this right up, still works great! And yes, it was still running covered with yeast slurry. Easy to center the stir bar, just start it slow and move slowly side to side, you'll hear the click when it finds the magnets. Turn up the speed and a few gentle nudges will get it perfectly centered, the "off center" clicking will disappear when you hit center. I see in another comment it works with a 5000ml flask, will need to get one for those bigger starters! And I ALWAYS make starters now, big difference!

Stir plate review
This plate works very well. The only issue I have is getting the stir pill to get started with out getting pushed to the edge of the flask. Sometimes I nail it on the first try others I spend 10 minutes of messing with it to get it started. Many have built their own for less cost but I was not compelled to do so but I understand that part of the reward/pleasure of brewing is to make your own equipment. I built my first wort chiller and was happy to do so. -Chris
